TBN Exploratory Trips (Feb-Mar 2017)

Last weekend, Transformational Business Network (TBN) Asia launched an event to reinstate its mission of restoring human dignity through using businesses with social impact to alleviate poverty in Southeast Asia. The event highlighted how a shift towards providing employment opportunities for the poor instead of giving financial aid can have a more sustainable impact in poverty alleviation.

The event was also a call for more people who are concerned & want to be involved in using their skills, network, time, and resources to alleviate poverty through sustainable enterprise, to collaborate with like-minded people in the TBN community.

TBN Asia will be conducting 4 exploratory trips to Batam, Jakarta, parts of Malaysia, and Singapore. The aims of the trip are:

  • For us to have a glimpse of what poverty is like for many, so we can understand and invest in socially impactful projects
  • For professionals and potential investors to make a difference with your skills and experience
  • For us to decide if we are able to volunteer our time and resources to the projects we will encounter

1. 25th Feb 2017 (Sat) AGAPE CONNECTING PEOPLE (S$50)

Some of the highlights include visiting Dignity School – a school that provides quality Montessori education for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and is now moving into the arena of social enterprises to support their work. The Picha Project is a social enterprise led by 3 young ladies who started a traditional food catering company that employs mothers from refugee families.

And not forgetting having awesome food in Malaysia!

Batam is a convenient and affordable tourist destination, known for its beaches, resorts, nightlife and duty-free malls. But step beyond this enclave and you’ll discover a whole new side of Batam that only the locals are privy to. We will learn more about the following projects:

The Appsani toilet project is part of TBN’s network of impact projects. This is another area where you can participate in. You can either volunteer your time to help build the toilet or help fund the toilet at SGD$250.

The MBB sewing project was started by a group of volunteers who called themselves the Jubilee Group in 2016, with a mission to create a small sustainable co-opt idea in sewing business. This is in part to help fulfil MBB founders’ (read about the MBB school story) desire to create jobs for the parents of the students to further improve the community’s quality of life.

The project is currently led by Jeremy Han (TBN Vice-Chairman and Steven Lee (Chairman of Actxplorer) with the help of Jubilee Group and Actxplorer. The project needs more volunteers experienced in production and sales & marketing. If you have any ideas, expertise or connection, do join us in this journey or connect with us via contact@actxplorer.com
